When I Feel Unseen

If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

There is a very human part of me that longs to be appreciated.

To be seen.

To be acknowledged.

To know that what I do matters to someone.

And when that appreciation doesn’t come — when the effort goes unnoticed, when the sacrifice is quiet, when no one says thank you — I feel it. Not in a dramatic way, but in a quiet, honest way. It makes me pause. It makes me question. It makes me wonder if what I’m doing is being seen at all.

In those moments, these words from Galatians stop me: am I trying to win the approval of people, or of God? If my heart is driven by human applause, I will always feel restless, always chasing, never settled. But if my heart is anchored in God’s approval, I can serve freely, knowing that I already belong to Him.

Colossians 3:23 (NIV)

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”

Colossians reminds me that whatever I do — seen or unseen, praised or ignored — is ultimately done for the Lord, not for people. God sees every act of obedience. He sees every sacrifice. He sees every time I show up when it would be easier not to. And more than that — He loves me, not because of what I do, but because I am His.

There is deep freedom in that truth.

Because while appreciation from people is meaningful, it was never meant to be my source. God’s love is constant. His approval is not based on performance. His delight in me is not dependent on recognition from others.

And yet, knowing this doesn’t mean I harden my heart or stop caring about people. Instead, it invites me to live differently. If the love of my Lord and Savior truly flows through me, then I don’t only receive His seeing — I mirror it. His love allows me to see the beauty in others, to notice the quiet faithfulness around me, and to offer appreciation for both the big and the little things.

So today, I want to do my part:

To say thank you.

To speak encouragement.

To honour the ones who serve quietly.

To show appreciation not just when it’s obvious, but simply for who people are.

When appreciation is quiet in my own life, I remind myself: I am still seen. I am still valued. I am still loved. And at the same time, I ask God to help me become someone who reflects His heart — seeing others, honouring others, and letting His love move through me in the way I notice, affirm, and appreciate them.

Not for applause.

Not for recognition.

But for Him.

Galations 1:10 NIV

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people?

Where have you felt unseen or unappreciated lately?

How does it shift your heart to remember that God sees you fully and loves you completely?

Who around you might need a simple word of appreciation or encouragement today — for something big, something small, or simply for who they are?

As you breathe in, whisper: “You see me.”

As you breathe out, whisper: “Help me see others.”

Reflection

Closing Prayer

Lord,

You know my heart and You see every effort, even the ones no one else notices.

When I feel overlooked or unappreciated, remind me that Your love and approval do not change.

Free me from living for the applause of people, and anchor me in the truth that I belong to You.

Let Your love flow through me so that I notice, honour, and appreciate the people around me —

for the big things, the little things, and simply for who they are.

Make me a reflection of Your kindness and Your seeing.

Thank You for seeing me, valuing me, and loving me fully.

Amen.
