Feed Your Spirit: We Need Our Daily Bread
When we don't eat, our bodies let us know.
At first, we may simply feel hungry. Then the hunger becomes harder to ignore. We become tired. Our energy drops. We feel weaker and weaker, and eventually our bodies begin crying out for the nourishment they need.
Our spirits are much the same.
Just as our bodies need physical food, our spirits need God's Word.
Jesus called God's Word our daily bread because it is not something we were meant to consume once in a while. We need it continually.
When we go days without opening God's Word, spending time in prayer, or seeking His presence, we may not immediately notice what is happening inside of us.
But slowly, we can become spiritually tired.
Our patience becomes shorter. Our faith begins to weaken. Fear becomes louder.
The things of this world begin to influence us more. We start trying to handle everything in our own strength. And just like a body that hasn't been fed, our spirit begins crying out for nourishment.
Sometimes we wonder why we feel so spiritually empty, and the answer may be simple:
We're hungry.
Our souls need to be fed. God's Word reminds us who we are. It strengthens us when we are weak. It gives us wisdom when we don't know what to do. It brings comfort when we are hurting. It corrects us when we are going in the wrong direction. It gives us hope when circumstances make us want to give up. And prayer keeps us connected to the One who provides that nourishment.
We wouldn't expect our bodies to function well if we never ate. So why do we expect our spiritual lives to remain strong when we continually neglect our relationship with God?
We need our daily bread.
Not just on Sundays.
Not only when we're struggling.
Not only when we need an answer.
Every day.
Some days we may have an hour to spend in God's presence. Other days, perhaps all we can offer is a few quiet minutes and a simple prayer.
But what matters is that we keep coming back.
Keep praying.
Keep listening.
Keep feeding our spirits.
Because the world will constantly offer us things that promise to satisfy us, but only God can truly nourish our souls.
Matthew 4:4 NIV
“Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Have I been feeding my spirit as consistently as I feed my body?
What happens to my attitude, my faith, and my peace when I go too long without spending time with God?
What can I do today to make God's Word and prayer part of my daily nourishment?
Take a moment today to remember:
“Just as my body needs food to remain strong, my spirit needs God's Word to remain strong. Lord, give me a hunger for Your presence and Your Word.”
Reflection
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being my daily bread.
Forgive me for the times I have allowed myself to become spiritually hungry because I have become too busy, distracted, or focused on everything else around me.
Give me a deeper hunger for Your Word.
Help me desire Your presence—not only when I need something from You, but because I simply want to know You more.
When my faith feels weak, feed me.
When my heart feels empty, fill me.
When I am discouraged, strengthen me through Your Word.
Help me make time for You every day, because I know that just as my body cannot thrive without nourishment, my spirit cannot thrive without You.
Lord, give me my daily bread. Feed my spirit, strengthen my faith, and keep me close to You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
