Growing In Christ: Becoming More Like Him
Following Christ is not about becoming perfect overnight. It is about growing.
When we first begin walking with Christ, we may not understand everything. We may still struggle with our reactions, our thoughts, our patience, our forgiveness, and our faith. But God doesn't expect us to have everything figured out immediately. He invites us to keep coming closer, keep learning, and keep allowing Him to change us.
Growing in Christ means allowing God to work on the parts of us that need His attention. It means learning to respond differently than we once did. When we would have reacted in anger, we learn to pause. When we would have held onto resentment, we learn to forgive. When we would have depended entirely on ourselves, we learn to trust God. When fear would have controlled us, we learn to choose faith.
And sometimes growth is difficult to recognize because it happens slowly.
A seed doesn't become a tree overnight. In the same way, spiritual growth often happens quietly—through one prayer, one decision, one act of obedience, one lesson, and one difficult situation at a time.
You may look at yourself and think, “I still have so much work to do.”
And that's okay.
We all do.
But don't become so focused on where you still need to go that you forget to look back at how far God has already brought you.
Maybe you're more patient than you used to be.
Maybe you pray instead of panic.
Maybe you forgive more quickly.
Maybe you recognize God's voice more clearly.
Maybe you don't respond to certain situations the way you once did.
That's growth.
Growing in Christ doesn't mean we never struggle. It means we don't remain the same.
Every day gives us another opportunity to become more like Jesus—to love more, forgive more, serve more, trust more, and surrender more.
And when we fall short, we don't have to believe that we've failed completely. We can repent, learn, receive God's grace, and keep moving forward.
God is patient with our growth. He isn't finished with us.
So don't compare your journey to someone else's. Don't become discouraged because you aren't where you think you should be.
Ask yourself instead:
“Am I closer to Christ than I was before?”
If the answer is yes, keep going.
Even small steps matter when they are taking you closer to God.
2 Peter 3:18 NIV
“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”
Am I growing closer to Christ, or have I become comfortable where I am?
What area of my life is God asking me to grow in?
How have I changed since I began walking with Christ?
Is there a reaction, habit, attitude, or mindset that I need to surrender to God?
Take a moment today to remember:
“God is not finished with me. I may not be where I want to be, but I am not where I used to be. By His grace, I am still growing.”
Reflection
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being patient with me as I grow.
Help me become more like Christ in my thoughts, my words, my actions, and the way I treat others.
When I become discouraged by my weaknesses, remind me that growth takes time. Help me not to compare my journey with anyone else's.
Show me the areas of my life that need to change, and give me the courage to surrender them to You.
Help me grow in faith when I am uncertain, in patience when I am waiting, in forgiveness when I am hurt, and in love when it is difficult.
Thank You for not giving up on me.
Continue shaping me, teaching me, correcting me, and drawing me closer to You.
I may not be finished, but I trust the One who is still working on me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
