Lessons From Samuel: Learning To Listen When God Speaks
The story of Samuel teaches us that hearing from God requires us to slow down, listen, and be willing to respond.
Samuel was still young when God first called him. He heard his name in the night and assumed it was Eli calling him. Three times Samuel got up and went to Eli.
Eventually, Eli realized that it was God calling Samuel.
He told Samuel to respond:
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
What a powerful prayer.
Samuel didn't say, “Speak, Lord, and I'll decide whether I want to listen.”
He said, “Your servant is listening.”
There is a difference between hearing God's voice and being willing to listen to what He is saying.
Sometimes we ask God for direction, but we've already decided what we want Him to say.
We pray for an answer, but only want the answer that agrees with our plans.
We ask God to open a door, but become frustrated when He closes one.
Samuel shows us a different posture:
“Lord, I am listening. Tell me what You want me to know.”
Listening to God requires stillness.
We live in a world filled with noise—opinions, expectations, social media, responsibilities, worries, and our own thoughts.
Sometimes we are so busy asking God to speak that we don't give ourselves enough quiet to listen.
God may speak through Scripture.
He may bring conviction to our hearts.
He may give us wisdom through prayer.
He may use circumstances or trusted, godly people to help guide us.
But whatever we believe God is saying, we should always test it against His Word. God will never lead us in a way that contradicts Scripture.
And listening isn't only about receiving direction.
Sometimes God simply wants us to be still and know that He is God.
Maybe today you don't need another answer.
Maybe you need to quiet your heart long enough to remember that God is already with you.
If you're waiting for something, ask Him for patience.
If you're facing a decision, ask Him for wisdom.
If you're confused, ask Him for clarity.
And then be willing to listen.
Don't just pray, “Lord, hear me.”
Sometimes our prayer needs to be:
“Lord, help me hear You.”
1. Make room for God to speak.
You cannot hear clearly when your heart is constantly filled with noise.
2. Be willing to hear what God says, not just what you want Him to say.
True surrender means being open to His direction.
3. God's Word is essential for discernment.
Always measure what you believe you are hearing against Scripture.
4. Listening should lead to obedience.
When God gives direction, our response should be willing obedience.
5. You don't have to understand everything immediately.
Samuel learned to recognize God's voice over time. Give yourself permission to grow in your relationship with Him.
1 Samuel 3:9 NIV
“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”
Lessons
Have I been giving God enough quiet space to speak to my heart?
Am I truly willing to follow His direction, even when it isn't what I expected?
What distractions do I need to quiet so I can hear Him more clearly?
Reflection
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Teach me to listen for Your voice.
Quiet the noise around me and within me so that I can recognize Your direction. Help me not to come to You with a heart that has already decided what I want, but with a heart that is genuinely surrendered to Your will.
Give me wisdom to recognize Your voice and discernment to test everything against Your Word.
When You say wait, help me wait.
When You say move, give me courage to move.
When You say let go, give me strength to release it.
And when You simply ask me to be still, help me trust that You are working even when I cannot see it.
Today, Lord, my prayer is simple:
Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
