Lessons From The Story Of Gideon: When You Do Not Feel Deserving
Gideon's story is a beautiful reminder that God does not always call the person who feels the most qualified. Sometimes He calls the person who feels the least deserving.
When God called Gideon, he wasn't standing in a place of confidence and strength. He was hiding from the Midianites, trying to protect what little he had.
When the angel of the Lord appeared to him and called him a “mighty warrior,” Gideon couldn't understand it.
He essentially asked, “Who, me?”
He looked at his family.
He looked at his circumstances.
He looked at himself.
And he didn't see someone capable of doing what God was asking.
But God saw something Gideon couldn't see yet.
God saw his potential before Gideon saw it himself.
Maybe you can relate.
Sometimes we look at our past, our mistakes, our circumstances, or our weaknesses and think, “Why would God choose me?”
We may feel like we haven't done enough to deserve His goodness.
We may wonder if we are worthy of the answer we've been praying for.
But God's blessings are not a reward for being perfect.
They are an expression of His grace.
Gideon's story reminds us that God can take someone who feels small and accomplish something great through them.
And notice what God told Gideon:
“I will be with you.”
God didn't tell Gideon that he would suddenly become perfect or that he would never be afraid.
He promised His presence.
That was enough.
Today, if you are feeling undeserving, remember this:
You don't have to convince God that you are worthy.
You don't have to have everything figured out.
You don't have to be the strongest person in the room.
You simply need to trust the God who sees you differently than you sometimes see yourself.
The same God who saw a mighty warrior hiding in Gideon can see strength in you when all you see is weakness.
So don't disqualify yourself.
Don't count yourself out.
Don't assume your past has cancelled your future.
God's grace is bigger than your mistakes, His purpose is greater than your insecurities, and His faithfulness does not depend on your perfection.
Maybe today isn't about asking, “Am I deserving?”
Maybe it's about asking:
“Do I trust the One who is giving it to me?”
Because sometimes God comes through for us not because we earned it, but because He is good.
1. God sees what you cannot see in yourself.
Gideon saw weakness; God saw a mighty warrior.
2. You don't have to feel worthy for God to use you.
His calling is based on His purpose, not your perfection.
3. God's grace isn't something we earn.
We receive it because He is loving and merciful.
4. God doesn't promise that you won't be afraid.
He promises that He will be with you.
5. Don't disqualify yourself.
If God has not counted you out, don't count yourself out either.
Judges 6:15 NIV
“But Lord,” Gideon asked, “how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”
Lessons
Have I been telling myself that I don't deserve God's goodness?
Am I allowing my past or my weaknesses to make me doubt what God can do in my life?
Can I trust God's grace even when I don't feel worthy?
As you breathe in, whisper: “God, You see me.”
As you breathe out, whisper: “I trust Your grace.”
Reflection
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the story of Gideon and the reminder that You see me differently than I sometimes see myself.
When I feel unworthy, remind me of Your grace. When I focus on my weaknesses, remind me of Your strength. When I question whether I deserve Your goodness, remind me that Your love is not something I have to earn.
Thank You for every blessing, every open door, every answered prayer, and even the things I am still waiting for.
Help me to receive Your goodness with a grateful heart instead of questioning whether I am worthy of it.
Just as You told Gideon, “I will be with you,” remind me today that I am never walking alone.
I trust You.
I trust Your grace.
And I trust that You know exactly what You are doing in my life.
